Vintage Midcentury Accolay Blue Pot

The well-known, collectible French Accolay ceramics were handmade in the village of Accolay in Burgundy, and pieces are signed with the village name rather than an individual's.

The workshop was created by four former students of Alexander Kostanda: Dangon, Rodet, Palais and Boutaud, whom Kostanda had trained at his studio in Cluny. Active from 1945 to 1983, their pottery stands out for its technical inventiveness and abundant production. They also had a clever sales approach: they turned service stations along the Nationale 6 into permanent showrooms, catching Parisian tourists heading south on holiday.

Today Accolay is prized as French mid-century modern ceramics. It's especially known for bold, often contrasting glazes, such as the deep "Gauloise blue," as well as speckled turquoise and mink-brown.
